Dragon

Featuring Eileen, NS Teacher

Yin yoga teaches us that healing often happens in the stillness—in the pause between what was and what’s becoming. Dragon calls us into the depths of the hips, where the body often stores stories, tension, and truth.

Dragon isn't about performance or flexibility. It's about the courage to stay—to remain present in the intensity without rushing to escape. When we land in Dragon, we meet ourselves at the edge. Not to push through, but to soften into.

This deep lunge targets the hip flexors and groin, opening a channel for release. And it’s not just physical—this pose offers space to process the emotions that often live below the surface: frustration, grief, vulnerability. These aren't obstacles to our practice—they are the practice.

Yin Yoga teaches us:

The longer we stay, the more we learn to breathe deep through resistance.
The longer we stay, the more we understand that discomfort is different than pain—and that both have something to teach us.

How to Practice Dragon Pose:
From hands and knees, step your right foot forward between your hands. Allow the front foot to slide out slightly to the side to create space. Keep the back knee grounded and hips sinking toward the earth. Hands can rest on blocks, the floor, or even the thigh. Soften your jaw. Invite the breath to reach the hips. Hold for 2–5 minutes, then gently switch sides.

Variations:

  • Baby Dragon: Hands grounded, gentle hold

  • Dragon Flying High: Hands on thigh, lifting chest

  • Dragon Flying Low: Forearms on blocks or mat

  • Twisted Dragon: One hand on the floor, the other reaching up or back

Mindful Tips:

  • Use props such as blocks under hands and/or a blanket under the back knee for support

  • Keep breath slow and steady—especially when intensity rises

  • Exit slowly and rest in Child’s Pose or on your back to absorb the effects

Affirmation:
“I stay with myself in this moment. I breathe deep through resistance and allow space for release.”

Let Dragon be a reminder: even in the fire of sensation, you can remain grounded. Even in the stillness, transformation is unfolding. Join us for an upcoming class to experience the dragon and more!
