Light your Inner Fire {Tapas}
As we move into August, the long days of summer invite us to pause and ask ourselves an important question:
What keeps your inner fire burning?
In yoga philosophy, Tapas is one of the five Niyamas, or personal observances. The word Tapas comes from the Sanskrit root meaning "to heat" or "to burn." It represents the inner fire that fuels growth, transformation, and purposeful living.
While the word "discipline" is often associated with Tapas, it isn't about being rigid or pushing ourselves to exhaustion. Instead, Tapas encourages us to show up with intention and consistency. It's the quiet commitment to keep returning to the practices that help us feel healthy, grounded, and connected, even when life becomes busy or challenging.
True transformation rarely happens through one grand gesture. More often, it unfolds through small, repeated choices made with care.
The Fire Within
Each of us carries an inner fire.
Sometimes it burns brightly with energy and inspiration. Other times it feels like only a tiny ember, waiting for a little attention and care.
Tapas reminds us that we don't have to wait until we feel motivated to begin. Often, motivation grows after we take the first step.
It might look like:
Rolling out your yoga mat, even if only for ten minutes.
Choosing a nourishing meal.
Going for a walk instead of scrolling your phone.
Taking a few mindful breaths before responding to a difficult situation.
Creating space for rest when your body asks for it.
Returning to your meditation practice after missing a few days.
These simple choices become the fuel that keeps our inner fire alive.
Progress Over Perfection
It's easy to believe that discipline means never missing a day or always getting it right.
Yoga teaches us something different.
Tapas isn't about perfection. It's about commitment.
There will be days when practice feels effortless and days when simply showing up is enough. Both are valuable. Every time we choose to begin again, we strengthen our resilience and deepen our trust in ourselves.
Growth isn't measured by perfection. It's measured by our willingness to return.
A Practice for August
As you move through this month, choose one small habit that supports your well-being.
Ask yourself:
What helps me feel most like myself?
What practice brings me back to center?
What small commitment can I realistically keep this month?
Rather than making dramatic changes, focus on consistency. Even five mindful minutes each day can create meaningful transformation over time.
Like tending a campfire, our inner light grows brighter when we continue to care for it.
May this month inspire you to move with purpose, breathe with intention, and trust that every small step forward has the power to transform your journey.
We can't wait to practice with you.
